Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation about the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team could be designing a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
