The Premier Record of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Claims the Top Spot.

On the surface, Lux might appear closer to a challenging university challenge than a new pop album by a musician whose previous hit featured an international pop star. Split across 4 different movements and sung in thirteen languages, this is a dizzying classical-tinged album exploring female mystery, spiritual transcendence, and physical change, often via the lens of various women saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic handled with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—soars skyward on this record, buoyed by the lush sound of a major orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast roll call of contributors. The pure ambition by itself renders the efforts of contemporary pop stars appear rather laughable.

Transcending Scholarly Exercise

That Lux manages to escape overly intellectual posturing feels nearly miraculous, with complete praise belonging to the artist. Although this is not her first album to fuse historical sounds and modern styles, the ambitions are much greater here, with the balancing act far more precarious. What truly elevates her fourth album, outside of its complex tunes, dense compositions, and inherent theatricality, proves to be an essential spirit of playfulness. Much like the legendary artist at her peak, there is a wondrous sense to Rosalía's voice that pulls you up in its tornado. Even when she is tearing hearts in two, you still want to stay alongside her for the ride.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

This exuberant energy comes forth clearly during a stunning piano-led song about a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool for more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything falls away, to reveal we hear a gleeful giggle and a comment before a hilariously over-the-top string surge crashes in like comedic force. The song immediately segues into the frenetic track driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The magic with this album lies in you rarely quite understand—or even want to know—where you will go next."

Almost every track ends at a totally different point than how it started. One moment explores the fleeting nature of celebrity over a delicate orchestration before disintegrating in electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing her earlier trap-infused work starts off dark and sinister, featuring prowling vocals, until sudden traditional handclaps and an angelic choir enter to smooth the song's rough edges.

The Bridge Of Experiment & Pop

A key achievement of the album involves navigating the line of radical innovation and broad accessibility. It is no surprise that it has achieved the artist's first work to break into the Top 5 of key markets: at its core a suite of truly catchy hits. A song performed primarily in the English language builds around a chorus that feels to gather increasingly nagging melodies as it spirals upward. That feat gets repeated by a different powerful ballad that grows and contracts, weaving layered tunes like a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its playful, theatrical flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • In its words, it shares with cultural impact of contemporary breakup anthems, lambasting a former lover labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, akin to a storybook character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

Lux represents pop on a maximalist level, an ambitious reach for high Art in an era of looming AI-generated sameness. It eschews solipsism for glorious transcendence, creating an over-the-top drama that masterfully manages its inherent ridiculousness. It is an abundant well of hidden treasure that takes patience to fully mine but never seem like hard work. While some major pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, Lux is a lavish feast at which the guests at the table, some tipsy on sacred wine, flutter between conversations about ancient figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared gossip about useless partners. It is a contemporary musical from pop's truly restlessly creative practitioner.
